Simon Wilson of Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling stormed to victory in the Springfield Financial Charity 10, setting a new course record. While Erica Booth (Lancashire Road Club) won the women’s event.
Wilson knocked 24 seconds off the previous course record set by his fellow teammate, Dan Bigham, in August 2020. Wilson’s time was an impressive 17 minutes and 29 seconds. The 41-year-old was carrying on his form from the Tour of Britain.
The popular L1015 South Lakeland out and back course saw a significant number of riders withdraw as heavy rain was forecast during the night and early morning. However, as dawn broke, the rain had stopped, and as the first of the riders set out at 7.30 am, the course was dry with barely any wind. That left near perfect conditions for the remaining 64 riders from the original 90 to compete in the Springfield Financial Charity 10.
In the women’s competition, Erica Booth took the victory, clocking a time of 22:12 minutes. Joanna Cebrat (Bury Clarion CC) took second at 23:27, and Sue Cheetham (North Lancashire Road Club) was third at 24:57.
